Ivan Makarov > As I got to Yosemite earlier this week, the forecast was calling for rain and snow in the second half of the day, but the sky was clear in the morning. The clouds started rolling in a later afternoon, and by next day, the snow and rain was in full action. Right now we're experiencing one of the last storms of this winter. To capture two moving elements in this image - the clouds that were moving left, and the Merced River that was moving right in this photo - I decided to do it with a long exposure.
Ivan Makarov > Last year I spent some time photographing Cathedral of Saint Joseph that is located near where I work in downtown San Jose. I went back to that location several times, but I don't think that I captured the spirit of that building quite yet. I love this old structure, because it stands apart from all the other boring utilitarian buildings that prevail in Silicon Valley. It stood here long before we had electricity, let alone iPhones, photo cameras, internet and Photoshop.

I made another stop by the Cathedral this morning on my way to work. This guy was sitting there on the stairs of the building right as I arrived. The service just ended, and it looks like he was taking it in before heading to work, or home, or wherever else he was headed. I felt jealous - I don't remember when was the last time I could sit down like this stress free for a few minutes in the morning.

We all should stop every once in a while and think about things before rushing out to whatever we have to do next.
Ivan Makarov > My tribute to Ansel Adam's photograph from Portfolio I. I was happy to discover it one day because this is where my wife and I got married (years before I knew who Ansel Adams was). I took this photograph from about the same spot that Ansel took his, but decide to exlude the fense due to weird shadows that day.

Ivan Makarov > I found myself walking around the downtown of Washington DC on Sunday morning, after shooting friend's wedding in Maryland the day before. As I was walking the streets, I got a long email from a family member that I started reading it on my Blackberry. It went on and on and I had to stop myself and think about this for a second. I don't visit DC all that often. In fact, this was just the second time I was there with time to wonder around. I love the architecture that's there - I don't think any city in the US can compare. And here I was, doing what I could have done anywhere else in this world - ignoring this world while reading an email I could read later. I put the Blackberry away and spent the next few hours looking and shooting.

While at the Union Station, the sun came out of the clouds for few minutes increasing the contrast of the scene, as if kissing these tall walls. As I stood there at the venue gazing at the beautiful construction of this old building, trying to take it all in, this woman passed me. She was reading something on her phone being completely unaware of what I was seeing, or how the light was falling, or that I was staring at her through my camera.

As I took this photograph of her, I realized that the world she was in was exactly what I was doing few hours ago. How often do we ignore the life around us while there is so much else to see if we just stop staring at our gadgets?
